Super Bowl LII: The New Recycling Solution

February 2, 2018

By Josef Lorenzo | Rewire

China used to buy about half of the recycled materials on the planet, according to the New York Times. Now, China has closed its borders to those recyclables because contamination levels have been so high. This isn’t a new problem though—contamination has plagued the recycling industry for years.

Since China has banned the United States’ recyclables, the price for recyclable material has gone down, and the cost to sort the materials has gone up. This means that it’s becoming increasingly difficult for sorting facilities to make a profit.

In this video, we talk to experts across the country that have ideas on how to fix this difficult situation, and explore the solution that’s being piloted at the 2018 Super Bowl in Minneapolis.
